The Academy North Campus Gymnasium was designed to meet an immediate need while advancing a much larger vision for the school’s future.
Located on The Academy of Classical Christian Studies’ 37-acre North Campus, the gymnasium was the first built phase of a campus-wide master plan developed by Gardner Studio. The facility brings together a regulation-size court, strength-training space, classrooms, and supporting areas for competitive athletics, physical education, health, and community use.
Gardner worked with The Academy to identify a location that would make the gym accessible in daily campus life while preserving a clear path for future development. A durable metal-clad exterior gives the building a direct presence, while a warmer, more transparent entrance creates a welcoming point of arrival. Inside, wood, polished concrete, daylight, and straightforward detailing support the energy and demands of an active school environment.
The gymnasium is one part of Gardner’s extensive work with The Academy. At North Campus, the team assessed existing facilities and developed a long-range plan encompassing future classrooms, choir and rehearsal spaces, playgrounds, natural learning areas, a renewed central plaza, expanded athletics, parking, and improved arrival and dismissal circulation.
Gardner’s relationship with The Academy also extends to its Midtown high-school campus, where portions of the historic First Baptist Church complex were adapted in phases to support classrooms, administration, arts, athletics, and shared gathering spaces.
Across these projects, the work begins with the same question: how can each immediate investment strengthen the school while creating room for what comes next?
PLANNING BEYOND THE FIRST BUILDING
The North Campus Gymnasium was conceived as part of a coordinated campus framework rather than as an isolated facility. Gardner studied how academic, arts, athletic, outdoor, and operational needs could develop together across the property.
Building the gym first allowed The Academy to meet a significant program need while establishing the location, circulation, and organizational structure for future campus improvements. The result is both a completed athletic facility and a meaningful first step in the school’s continuing growth.
